Cognition
The mental operations involved in thinking; the biological/neurological processes of the brain that facilitate thought. Sometimes contrasted with affect or emotion and conation (wanting or willing).
Community of enquiry
The process of developing knowledge and understanding by participating in purposeful dialogue or collaborative discussion. Also the teaching technique used in Philosophy for Children with a class of pupils.
Conation
The act of willing or wanting (see also Bloom�s taxonomy).
Concept Mapping
Representing information in diagram form where key words are linked by lines. These lines are then labeled to express the relationship between the terms. The resulting 'map' shows links between key ideas and can then be read through to clarify relationships between key terms.
Concrete Preparation
An introductory phase in some teaching thinking approaches where new words are introduced and learners become familiar with what the task is about.
Constructivism
A view of learning in which learners are seen as building or developing their own understanding of how the world works from their experience and interaction with people around them.
Creative Thinking
Producing new ideas or thoughts. Imaginative thinking that is aimed at producing outcomes that involve synthesis of ideas or lateral thinking; thinking that is not analytical or deductive, sometimes referred to as divergent thinking.
Critical Thinking
The process of determining the authenticity, accuracy, or value of something; characterised by the ability to seek reasons and alternatives, perceive the complete situation, and change one's view based on evidence and reasoning. Sometimes also called analytical or convergent thinking. Often related to formal or informal logic and to reasoning.
